The Largest Pair of Jeans Ever

Guinness World Record for sewing the largest pair of blue jeans celebrated on Friday, one day after cranes buckled while trying to lift the giant 7.5-tonne pants.

Workers laid the pair on the ground and put big balloons inside the legs to show off the size of the jeans, which are 141 feet (43 m) tall and 98 feet (30 m) wide.
They have pockets, red buttons and a brown belt.
On Thursday, disillusioned crane operators gave up trying to lift the pants with three machines and went looking for a fourth. They wanted to lift the pants to display them. On Friday, workers had to scrap the idea of hoisting the jeans altogether.
The Colombian city of Medellin currently holds the record for the world’s largest pair of jeans, which is measured by size, according to the clothing company that organized the event in San Juan de Lurigancho, a district full of textile plants east of the Peru’s capital, Lima.
The previous Guinness record hold is Colombian pair and it were 114 feet (35 m) tall by 82 feet (25 m) wide.
The company’s chief executive said material from the pants will be cut to make backpacks for area school children.

The Longest Underwater Tunnel in the World

This strange-looking beast in tokyo is an artificial island and tourist attraction by the name of umihotaru (translation: marine firefly) which forms part of the tokyo bay aqualine, a bridge-tunnel that connects kawasaki and kisarazu.

Cars can either drive over the 4.4km bridge to the island and park in order to admire the view or drive straight through to the tunnel entrance where they will be taken under the water for 9.5km until they reach kawasaki.

The tunnel is apparently the longest underwater tunnel in the world.

Saudi King Abdullah to buy Facebook for $150 billion to end the revolt

Saudi King Abdullah to buy Facebook for $150 billion to end the revolt

In what is being termed as pure Wall street Gordon Gecko tactics, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has decided to make an offer of $150 billion to buy out Facebook. Inside sources within the kingdom suggest that he is very upset with Mark Zukerberg for allowing the revolt to get out of control. In a personal meeting between Mark Zuckerberg and King Abdullah on Jan 25, 2011, Zuckerberg had promised that he would not allow any revolt pages to be formed on Facebook even while he allowed Egypt and Libya revolt pages to be formed. But little did King Abdullah know Zuckerberg. Had he seen the movie “Social Network”, he would have been better advised than to trust Zuckerberg.

Saudi King Abdullah to buy Facebook for $150 billion to end the revolt

Left with no option, Abdullah advised by Goldman Sachs has decided to buy out Facebook and “clean out the weeds”. The offer on the table is $150 billion. Facebook balance sheet was shown to King Abdullah and his kingdom advisors had mentioned that it is not even worth $1 billion given that it generates no profit. But the King threw the report into the dustbin and fired his advisors and decided to hand over the investment banking mandate to Goldman Sachs who put the value at $150 billion. The deal will be all cash. It is worthwhile to remind our readers that Goldman Sachs had invested into Facebook at an unimaginable $50 billion valuation.
Social networking site Facebook has raised USD 500 million from Goldman Sachs and Russian Internet investment group Digital Sky Technologies in a deal valuing the company at USD 50 billion, says a media report.
“Facebook, the popular social networking site, has raised USD 500 million from Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor in a deal that values the company at USD 50 billion,” the New York Times reported citing a source.
The deal makes Facebook now worth more than companies like eBay, Yahoo and Time Warner.

Under the terms of the deal, Goldman has invested USD 450 million, and Digital Sky Technologies, which has already sunk about half a billion dollars into Facebook, invested USD 50 million, the report noted.
According Goldman report, the many advantages of buying out Facebook far outweighs the cost of the transaction. Goldman Sachs made a presentation to King Abdullah of how the facebook could be used to cement his position for ever. Never again will his kingdom see another revolt. The presentation also involved some Facebook pages of bikini clad models profile among other profiles. Sources reveal that King Abdullah had made up his mind immediately and spoke to Lloyd Blankfein to complete the transaction as soon as possible.
We are yet to hear back from Mark Zuckerberg on the offer though. But most analysts believe that Zuckerberg will not take the offer and will wait for King Abdullah to up the offer to at least $500billion. In the meanwhile king Abdullah has now logged on the Facebook and was buzy profiling some of the models in the Goldman Sachs presentation.

World Youngest Grandmother in Romania

World Youngest Grandmother in Romania

World Youngest Grandmother in Romania
A 23-year-old woman from Romania has claimed to have become the “world’s youngest grandmother”, a media report said.
Mum-of-two Rifca Stanescu was 12 when she had her first child Maria. She urged her daughter not to follow her example – but Maria gave birth to son Ion while only 11,’The Sun’reported.
Rifca had married jewellery seller Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13. They eloped because Rifca feared her father wanted her to marry another village lad in Investi in Romania. She was forgiven when she had her daughter- making her mum, also Maria, a great grandmother at 40.
Son Nicolae was born a year later. The young mum later tried to persuade Maria to stay at school. But Maria left to wed when she was 10 and had her baby six months later, the report said.
Rifca cuddled grandson Ion, now two, and said: “I am happy to be a grandmother but wished more for Maria.”
Britain’s previous youngest grandmother was an unnamed 26-year-old from Yorks. Her daughter, 12, gave birth in 1999.

Why it’s become impossible to leave Facebook

I think I want to leave Facebook. It’s been brewing for a while, but I have been using it less and less for the past year and now I don’t think I really need it anymore. Why on earth, I hear you ask, would you want to leave Facebook – it is so much fun! It is so convenient! Well, it is not really all that fun anymore, and for convenience… let’s just say the no-Facebook experiment has gone on for about a month now and I am no worse off for it.
Facebook used to be fresh and fun, but now… I think the problem is that it is become an “everyone” platform. My wall is dominated by updates about TV, fishing and babies from people I went to school with – people I haven’t seen since school and have no particular need to catch up with. I log in, scroll down the screen, and log out – these are not my people anymore and Facebook is starting to represent nostalgia.
Then I move on to Twitter and all of a sudden the conversation is interesting again – it lets you fill the stream with people you want to listen to. If I want to say something private there is email – still the best way of communicating anything over 140 characters, I think. I have some friends, who like using Facebook’s private messaging system, and I don’t understand why – email is so much easier to search through later when you are looking for something.
What originally drew me to Facebook was the concept of sharing photos with people – you upload an album and everyone can see it. Then I discovered Flickr, which is probably the most amazing picture-sharing tool out there, and I have never looked back. So then, I have gone through the things I liked about Facebook and realised I can change all the functions with something else that I like better. Does that mean I am leaving? I don’t think so.
There is one function Facebook still has that nothing else can replace, and this stems from the fact that pretty much everyone uses it. Parties are organised on Facebook all the time, and I have heard of several instances where the friends who are not on Facebook are not invited because the host forgot. Not to mention if you want to find someone, anyone – you run a Facebook search. You can send them a message even if they are not a contact, and you don’t need to know their email address. Maybe I should not care about staying on the map like this, but that’s a separate discussion. The truth is that Facebook is becoming the new phonebook, and you leave at your peril.

Two Brothers Share One Wife

Two Brothers Share One Wife

HIMACHAL PRADESH, India (CNN) — Amar and Kundan Singh Pundir are brothers. Younger brother Amar breaks rocks in a mine for a living. Kundan farms their small piece of inherited land. They live in a beautiful but remote hillside village in the clouds of Himachal Pradesh, India

Two Brothers Share One Wife

Both aged in their 40′s, the two brothers have lived together nearly their whole lives. They are poor and share just about everything: Their home, their work and a wife. “See we have a tradition from the beginning to have a family of five to ten people. Two brothers and one wife.” Kundan says.
They practice what is known as fraternal polyandry — where the brothers of one family marry the same woman. Why…? Tradition and economics.
Life is hard here. The village is precariously perched on the side of a very steep hill about 6,000ft up. Most of the villagers survive off tiny plots of cropland. In this difficult terrain there is not enough land to go around. So, instead of finding separate wives and splitting up their inherited property, the brothers marry the same woman and keep their land together.
Wife Indira Devi says life with two husbands is not easy. “We fight a lot.”
But like any married couple they fight mostly over mundane stuff, except there are three spouses instead of two. “Usually it’s about chores, why didn’t you do this…? Why didn’t you do that…?” she says. But one thing they agreed on was the need to have children; they have three. So how does a married trio deal with sex…?
“We make shifts, change shifts and sleep on alternate days. We have to make shifts otherwise it won’t work,” Kundan says. “To run our families we have to do this, overcome the hurdles as well and then we have to control our hearts from feeling too much,” Amar adds.
To outsiders their arrangement may seem odd, but in the village of about 200 it is the norm.
Typically the marriages are arranged and women have two husbands. But some wives have three or four depending on how many brothers there are in a family. Polyandry is illegal in India but socially acceptable here. No one from the government seems to bother the villagers about the law. “It’s been going on for ages. My sister in law has two husbands, my mother in law also has two husbands,” Indira says.
And as to the question of which husband is the biological father of the children — the Pundir’s don’t know and don’t care. “For me everyone is the same, my mother and my fathers are the same. My mother and my fathers are like God to me,” 17-year old daughter Sunita Singh Pundir says. Even as modern society arrives in this ancient village through satellite dishes and mobile phones, the Pundirs say they want their age-old tradition to continue with their children. “Absolutely,” eldest son Sohna says.
He and his younger brother have already discussed it and will marry the same woman.
Daughter Sunita is not so sure.
“I would like one husband,” she says.
But when asked if she will marry for love or tradition, Sunita’s answer makes it clear the tradition of marrying more than one man will continue with the next generation. “I will never leave our tradition even if I have to forgo love. I will never spoil my parents’ reputation and my brothers.”

Kids Talking in Their Language [3.2 million views in 45 days]

One of the things that most parents know is that we should talk to our children. But what I didn’t know when I became a mother was why this was so important and what the impact of talking to my child was.  I didn’t know how much was enough and  whether there were particular topics I should be talking to my child about? These were the questions I set out to answer.

Missing The Old City Of Karachi

The city once known as “City of Lights”, has literally turned into a city of sheer darkness. This is not just another usual rant, that you get to read, here and there, but heartfelt and real.
The Karachi I grew up in was devoid of the linguistic and ethnic demarcation. It was 70’s, we were all multi ethnic in the neighborhood. Sindhis, Punjabis, the Pathans and Muhajirs (back then refered as Urdu speaking), use to band together as one. Of course you had to know the Karachite slang to fit in. Without that you were like a fish out of water. As we used to say, that you needed “super sharp antennas” to keep up with the slick Karachites. Any relative from Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad used to come to Karachi and it was hard for them to keep up with its hustle and bustle. But they were in total awe of the glitz and charm of the beach and neons.
Heck at school, it was like the entire United Nations of religions. Christians, Parsis, Hindus, Bahais we were all Pakistanis. There was something magical about those days. Some spirit of nationalism, which was like a gel, bringing us altogether. Ah yes it was the ZAB era and we were all trying to elevate the remaining Pakistan.
Back in those days, I remember right after the infamous 1971 war, Shahnaz Begum sang Aali Sahib’s song like,
“Mauj barhey ya aandhi aayey, diya jalayey rakhna hai
Ghar ki khatir sau dukh jhailey, ghar to aakhir apna hai
Well then came the 1974 Islamic Summit and our city was glowing, even though the actual summit was being held in Lahore. Spectacular illumination, were seen around Karachi like Inter Con, Baradari Gardens, Beach Luxury, PIDC House, Saddar and Clifton were literally glowing.
The decade of 80’s was not so blissful for the city. From the 1977 post election unrest to Bushra Zaidi incident, I believe it was 1985 or 1986 and the city literally transformed. We used to have occasional Shia Sunni bout in the 70’s, which was reprehensible and shameful. The Karachi University had a firing incident in late 70’s which or very early 80’s which was a major turning point.
From mid 80’s on it seems like the city went to dogs. The unity that we had as typical Karachite has been lost. Today’s Karachi has been divided and subdivided into linguistic turfs. Extortionist literally run the city and the first question that is on everyone’ s mind is, “Will I make it back to my home safely or not?”
BTW, with shrinking world and people reaching far away lands, the thrill of Port City has taken major toll as well. The relatives from other cities want to stay away from Karachi and they tend to say, “No way, do you think I am crazy to take this kind of risk to come to Karachi?”
Sad but true…..

What is the world's longest definition in the English dictionary?

Although definitions of words differ with different dictionaries one word seems to have the longest definition in most of them.

The unimpressive word set, with only 3 letters, 2 consonants and 1 vowel, takes the cake when it comes to long definitions.

According to thefreedictionary.com the definition of set is as follows:

set 1
v. set, set·ting, sets
v.tr.
1. To put in a specified position; place: set a book on a table.
2. To put into a specified state: set the prisoner at liberty.
3.
a. To put into a stable position: set the fence post into a bed of concrete.
b. To fix firmly or in an immobile manner: He set his jaw and concentrated on flying the plane through the storm.
4. To restore to a proper and normal state when dislocated or broken: set a broken arm.....

Actually the definition just keeps going and going, in fact we counted 6,672 words and 37,463 characters in the definition of set, so if you really want to see the entire world's longest definition you can find it here.
