The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games set a new standard for sustainable buildings, with several receiving LEED certification and the 2012 London games are poised to eclipse that mark. The 2016 summer games in Rio, seeking to be the first zero-carbon footprint games, may go even further in the green race based on this entry from Swiss architects RAFAA Architecture and Design.

 

The Solar City Tower is a solar power plant that by day produces energy for Rio de Janeiro as well as the Olympic village and a pumped seawater storage system to generate power at night. A special feature of the building is the urban waterfall, which on special occasions will be created by pumping water over the edges of the building to be a ‘symbol of the forces of nature,’ according to Rafael Schmidt of RAFAA.
The tower can be accessed is through an urban plaza and amphitheater 60 meters above sea level, which can be used for social gatherings and events. A cafeteria and shop are on the Atlantic Ocean side of the 105-meter tower, behind the waterfall, and will have ‘spectacular views,’ according to the architects. The top floor has an observation deck with 360-degree views of Rio and the ocean while the 90.5 level has a retractable bungee platform for thrill-seekers.

A 23-year-old woman from Romania has claimed to have become the “world’s youngest grandmother”, a media report said. 

Mum-of-two Rifca Stanescu was 12 when she had her first child Maria. She urged her daughter not to follow her example – but Maria gave birth to son Ion while only 11,’The Sun’reported.

Rifca had married jewellery seller Ionel Stanescu when she was 11 and he was 13. They eloped because Rifca feared her father wanted her to marry another village lad in Investi in Romania. She was forgiven when she had her daughter- making her mum, also Maria, a great grandmother at 40.

Son Nicolae was born a year later. The young mum later tried to persuade Maria to stay at school. But Maria left to wed when she was 10 and had her baby six months later, the report said.

Rifca cuddled grandson Ion, now two, and said: “I am happy to be a grandmother but wished more for Maria.”

Britain’s previous youngest grandmother was an unnamed 26-year-old from Yorks. Her daughter, 12, gave birth in 1999.

Two Brothers Share One Wife

Both aged in their 40′s, the two brothers have lived together nearly their whole lives. They are poor and share just about everything: Their home, their work and a wife. “See we have a tradition from the beginning to have a family of five to ten people. Two brothers and one wife.” Kundan says.

They practice what is known as fraternal polyandry — where the brothers of one family marry the same woman. Why…? Tradition and economics.

Life is hard here. The village is precariously perched on the side of a very steep hill about 6,000ft up. Most of the villagers survive off tiny plots of cropland. In this difficult terrain there is not enough land to go around. So, instead of finding separate wives and splitting up their inherited property, the brothers marry the same woman and keep their land together.

Wife Indira Devi says life with two husbands is not easy. “We fight a lot.”

But like any married couple they fight mostly over mundane stuff, except there are three spouses instead of two. “Usually it’s about chores, why didn’t you do this…? Why didn’t you do that…?” she says. But one thing they agreed on was the need to have children; they have three. So how does a married trio deal with sex…?

“We make shifts, change shifts and sleep on alternate days. We have to make shifts otherwise it won’t work,” Kundan says. “To run our families we have to do this, overcome the hurdles as well and then we have to control our hearts from feeling too much,” Amar adds.

To outsiders their arrangement may seem odd, but in the village of about 200 it is the norm.

Typically the marriages are arranged and women have two husbands. But some wives have three or four depending on how many brothers there are in a family. Polyandry is illegal in India but socially acceptable here. No one from the government seems to bother the villagers about the law. “It’s been going on for ages. My sister in law has two husbands, my mother in law also has two husbands,” Indira says.

And as to the question of which husband is the biological father of the children — the Pundir’s don’t know and don’t care. “For me everyone is the same, my mother and my fathers are the same. My mother and my fathers are like God to me,” 17-year old daughter Sunita Singh Pundir says. Even as modern society arrives in this ancient village through satellite dishes and mobile phones, the Pundirs say they want their age-old tradition to continue with their children. “Absolutely,” eldest son Sohna says.

He and his younger brother have already discussed it and will marry the same woman.

Daughter Sunita is not so sure.

“I would like one husband,” she says.

But when asked if she will marry for love or tradition, Sunita’s answer makes it clear the tradition of marrying more than one man will continue with the next generation. “I will never leave our tradition even if I have to forgo love. I will never spoil my parents’ reputation and my brothers.”

Face-detecting vending machine in Taiwan

TAIPEI: Government-funded researchers in Taiwan have developed a vending machine that recommends purchases based on people's faces, one of the inventors said on Friday.

The machine, designed by the Institute for Information Industry in Taipei, builds a profile after checking characteristics such as complexion and hair color, said researcher Tsai Chi-hang. Those clues help the machine guess a shopper's gender, approximate age and other things that might be helpful in promoting a suitable product.

Researchers spent the past year using a grant from Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs to build the first machine, which was rigged up on Thursday to spit out free cosmetics samples in the institute's lobby.

The machine looks for clues like whether a person has glasses, a beard or a mustache, said Tsai. Based on that it guesses their use of make-up or frequency of shaving, Tsai said. It then might recommend a facial mask, razor, or health products that people in a certain category are statistically likely to buy.

"If you stand in front of it, the machine has ways of recognizing your characteristics, though it doesn't know exactly who you are as that would infringe on personal privacy," Tsai said in an interview.

"It's a new concept, so it's taking some time to catch on," he said, referring to a model machine installed this week in the institute's lobby.

Researchers in Japan unveiled a similar concept in August last year. The Taiwanese machine isn't a copy of that but the Taiwan researchers kept up on what Japan was doing, Tsai said.

The machine also attempts to detect any smartphones, e-readers or tablets the buyer might be carrying, the institute told Taiwan's semi-official Central News Agency. That recognition would tell the machine whether the shopper was equipped to download books, music or films.

Taiwan's institute aims to tailor-design machines for vendors, with storage capacity and exact features depending on the individual order, Tsai said. The institute has already been in touch with some vendors, he said, but he declined to say how much machines would cost.

Information on what buyers actually choose will be stored and sent to the Internet, helping retailers to analyze shopping patterns. The institute has previously researched WiMax technology and worked with China to develop the Android-based Ophone OS.

This is the girl who has baffled top doctors because she spontaneously bleeds from her pores up to 50 times a day. Twinkle Dwivedi, 14, has strange disorder which means she loses blood through her skin without being cut or scratched. Terrified Twinkle has even undergone transfusions after pints of it seeped through her eyes, nose, hairline, neck and soles of her feet.

Dr. George Buchanan, a leading haematologist who has worked in Britain, travelled to India to look into the startling case. The teenager from Lucknar, Uttar Pradesh, has been suffering the frightening episodes up to 50 times a day for the last three years.
She said: "I bleed from my eyes, my hands, my head, from everywhere. From my ears, nose and eyes as well. "It doesn't hurt when the bleeding starts. But it makes me tired and sometimes I have headaches." Dr Buchanan, an American paediatric blood specialist, visited Twinkle's family at the Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai where he observed her bleeding.

He said: "I've never seen a case of someone who bleeds spontaneously from their scalp or their palms, or read about it in medical history.

"I was interested to see if I could help Twinkle."

The doctor was called to the family's hotel room to witness bleeding which began from her hair parting.

He was shocked to find no signs of cuts, bruising or redness.

Dr Buchanan said: "It doesn't seem physically possible for blood to seep through intact skin.

"But I saw no signs of cuts or bruising anywhere on her body."

Dr. Buchanan and his team carried out a series of tests including cutting Twinkle's skin to time how quickly the bleeding stops.

Tests show she may have a mild form of a clotting disorder, which means her platelets do not stick together properly. But this is not enough to explain the spontaneous bleeding.

Dr Buchanan is also investigating whether Twinkle or her mum cause the bleeding themselves.

Twinkle, a Hindu, said: "I am not causing this. Why would I want to make myself bleed?

Have you ever been in a house that had a bathroom where all the walls were mirrors?  Man I love those.
You get to see yourself in like 1000 positions.  What’s coolest is when you’re angled so that it looks
like there is an infinite amount of you.  You know, where it looks like it goes on forever.

With the right angles and equipment you can easily create this effect through photography.  Though
I’m not quite sure of the literal term for these kinds of photos I just assume call it
“infinite photography.”  However if you search that phrase none of these pictures will come up in
the results.

In any event, I’m glad I was able to find 20 pictures that I would deem “infinite.”
